Setting up a proxy server is simple with Windows 10, and we’ll walk you through the process in this tutorial. An intermediary service between your computer and the internet is called a proxy server. Requests you make to websites and other services while using this service will be processed by the proxy on your behalf.
Even though anybody can install and operate a proxy server, most corporations and educational institutions use them. The advantages of utilizing this technology are the cause. Because web requests are cached in the server and then served again when the user requests the same material, using a proxy server helps conserve bandwidth and data use.
By concealing the IP address of the client submitting an online request, it safeguards the computer identity. By monitoring user activity and preventing harmful traffic, it helps increase security. It can also restrict websites since a business can employ rules to prevent users from accessing other websites and social networks. These are the primary bullet points of a proxy server’s capabilities, albeit there are many more.
Three methods for configuring a proxy server on your Windows 10 device without the need of third-party programs are covered in this post.
-
Set up proxy server on Windows 10
-
Set up automatic proxy using script on Windows 10
-
Set up automatic proxy using manual configuration on Windows 10
Set up proxy server on Windows 10
The following instructions for configuring Windows 10’s proxy server settings are applicable to Ethernet and Wi-Fi network connections; however, a VPN connection will not use these settings.
Follow these steps to enable Windows 10’s proxy server to configure itself automatically:
Windows 10’s OpenSettings.
On Network & Internet, click.
Select “Proxy.”
To configure a proxy server on Windows 10, choose the “Automatically detect settings” option.
Automatic setup of a proxy server
When the Automatically detect settings option is selected, Windows 10 will use the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol (WPAD) to automatically find the settings. This capability is typically used by businesses and educational institutions to automatically establish or modify the proxy settings on computers that are a part of their networks.
You must disable the Automatically detect settings toggle switch if you do not want your device to detect settings automatically or if you are attempting to manually set up a proxy server.
Set up automatic proxy using script on Windows 10
A setup script can also be used to set up a proxy server. The proxy configuration will take place automatically, but you will need to manually specify this option by inputting the IP of the server that is hosting the script.
Follow these steps to set up a proxy server with a script:
Open the settings.
On Network & Internet, click.
Select “Proxy.”
Activate the Use setup scripttoggle switch under Automatic proxy setup.
Enter the script’s (or.pac file’s) address in the Script address textbox.
Setting up a proxy server script on Windows 10
Press the “Save” button.
Windows 10 will read the configuration from the script at the address you provided once you’ve finished the steps.
Set up automatic proxy using manual configuration on Windows 10
Follow these instructions to manually configure or modify the proxy server settings on Windows 10:
Open the settings.
On Network & Internet, click.
Select “Proxy.”
Activate the Use a proxy server toggle switch under the Manual proxy configuration section.
Enter the address that links to the proxy server in the Address textbox.
Enter the port number needed for the proxy to function in the Port textbox.
Setting up a proxy server manually in Windows 10
Press the “Save” button.
Network traffic will automatically flow through the proxy server when it has been configured. On the other hand, a list of addresses that will not use the proxy can also be specified.
These addresses can be entered in the text box located in the Manual proxy configuration section. Each item should be separated by a semicolon (;). An asterisk can be used as a wildcard if you have several addresses from the same domain. For instance, all of the addresses in the asterisk portion, such as forums.website.com, documents.website.com, etc., will match *.website.com.
Technically, unless your company requires it, local network traffic does not need to pass through a proxy. You should select the Don’t use the proxy server for local (intranet) addresses option if you don’t want to use a proxy to access local resources.
